Just read this on BBC news live update on travel chaos:

 

We've been told that the inbound flight tried to land twice and couldn't because of high winds. It was diverted to Amsterdam to refuel.

 

Ummmmm it had enough fuel for Amsterdam but not one of a dozen UK airports... or another couple of goes?!

But planes are landing though. Oh this one had a couple of issues. Maybe head north a hundred miles, not 600 miles east...

But the wind is blowing West to East perhaps? It might use less energy going for a guaranteed landing with a tail wind rather than fighting to land closer to home.

Ah yes, but less fuel may be required to get there and land, even into the wind for the landing itself

It could be that Amsterdam is one of the destinations for that airline, which will mean they have the facilities in place to refuel. The pilot can't simply put it on his credit card.

Oh yes he can watching one of the airline type shows one day and they landed at an airport without an agreement already in place and that's exactly what happened, wasn't a little plane either.

On the grand scheme of things, Amsterdam is just a small hope from the South of England. We get there in about 40 mins from Norwich.

After reading more stories from other airports and the capacity issues I no longer find this story as amusing....
