Live web-based video distribution

What are people using to live stream video within school? Ideally users could tune into a website from their laptops to view a live broadcast. Any ideas or recommendations? I'd rather not use a homegrown Quicktime/Darwin streaming solution; rather, something that is more robust (i.e. multiple streams, AD authentication, etc).

Within school you will need to multicast video channels and the cheapest way to do this is use VLC.

You really do not want to be sending your content to an external streaming service and then have all of your clients pulling it back individually through your Internet connection otherwise you are going to have bandwidth issues.

You really need to multicast internally, that can then become complicated as you will probably want to VLAN the video off and then have to use Multicast Routing.

 

Beyond free, you start to look at spending money on either a server/appliance based system.

 

There are IP TV options such as (but not restricted to) those from ProvideoInstruments.com or my favourite is the Teradek Cube System which we have two of.

 

The Internet based streaming services do have some nice features though, UStream has an App that let's you stream to the Internet direct from an iPad/iPhone which is pretty cool.

there are many options available one unit which i like and seems to be rather good is VGADVI Broadcaster

 

this unit should do the job. its not cheap but then to stream properly it is not cheap.
