tech_guy Posted December 5, 2013 Posted December 5, 2013 I bet the pilot needed a change of underpants after this: BBC News - High wind forces plane to abort landing
kearton Posted December 6, 2013 Posted December 6, 2013 Bah! I've seen planes land more sideways than this quite frequently when I lived in Wellington We Kiwi's must be a talented bunch (when it comes to pilots, anyway ) 1
CHR1S Posted December 6, 2013 Posted December 6, 2013 BHX is known for it. I have landed there sideways on several occasions normally night, winter flights, with the wing scraping the tarmac on one occasion. Never landed in winds as strong as that tho.
foofighterjim Posted December 6, 2013 Posted December 6, 2013 Not just that issue with BHX, the runway is only just long enough for the flights from Dubai so the pilot probably could have landed but would possibly have run out of runway.
computer_expert Posted December 6, 2013 Posted December 6, 2013 That Emirates aircraft did a good job of drying a portion of the runway for the next aircraft... Bah! I've seen planes land more sideways than this quite frequently when I lived in Wellington We Kiwi's must be a talented bunch (when it comes to pilots, anyway ) Wellington....Nope, I'll think i will give it a miss on a windy day!
SYNACK Posted December 6, 2013 Posted December 6, 2013 (edited) That Emirates aircraft did a good job of drying a portion of the runway for the next aircraft... Wellington....Nope, I'll think i will give it a miss on a windy day! Ah Wellington, nice short runway half way out to sea and you know you have hit a really calm day if the plane is pointing anywhere near the direction of the runway when you land. We do things efficiently here in NZ, that is why Wellington does not need any rollercoaster... they have an airport Oh, and Air NZ pilots are taught to land sideways first, it saves time if they ever have to land in Wellington. If you are after a less exciting time try Auckland or Christchurch (just not on a shaky day). Edited December 6, 2013 by SYNACK 1
