Unsurprising.

 

My missus is a telford-born person, used to the continual traffic etc noise. I lived in Wroxeter since birth - now, if anyone knows of Wroxeter, it's mostly fields, 1 road with minimal traffic, not even any streetlights, and a small collection of houses. Oh, and the Roman City, but they don't make much noise these days, hah. Unless you count the re-enactments where a centurion was spotted eating a Mr Whippy and checking his iPhone.

 

The first time I took her there, pulled up and shut the car off, she looked stunned. "The silence...oh my god..". Yes, isn't it.

 

You don't appreciate the sheer background noise, unless you can find a retreat that is missing it, and then it hits you.

I wonder how much is also higher buildings, surely the levels must have raised significantly since 1851 so the sound is deflected.
