HP Chromebook 11 yanked from store shelves

Not good for a product that has only been on sale for a month.

... HP has confirmed to The Verge that the company and Google initiated the halt in sales for the following reason: complaints from some Chromebook 11 owners that the chargers included with the notebooks were overheating. As an HP spokesperson told The Verge:

 

Google and HP are pausing sales of the HP Chromebook 11 after receiving a small number of user reports that some chargers included with the device have been damaged due to over-heating during use. We are working with the Consumer Product Safety Commission to identify the appropriate corrective action, and will provide additional information and instructions as soon as we can.

 

In the meantime, customers who have purchased an HP Chromebook 11 should not use the original charger provided with the product. In the interim they may continue using their HP Chromebook 11 with any other Underwriters Laboratories-listed micro-USB charger, for example one provided with a tablet or smartphone. We apologize for the inconvenience.

 

A number of leading retailers have pulled the new HP Chromebook 11 from sale – barely one month after it launched.

 

The online stores of Amazon, Best Buy, Google and HP are no longer listing the item as available for sale. The former pair have also removed all information about the device from their websites.

 

In addition to halting online sales, Best Buy has also gone a step further by issuing a memo to its retail store managers instructing them to “stop selling” the device “effective immediately”.

doesnt suprise me in the slightest seeing as they manufacture the most nuclear hot running of laptops, that their PSUs would want to try and catch fire too

The charger that comes with it is 5v too. So long as you use a high quality charger (capable of delivering at least 2A) it won't make a difference to charging time. Some of the cheap USB chargers can only manage 500mA; that would take a lot longer to charge with if it charged at all (my Samsung S3 won't charge unless it can draw about 1A)

Ah indeed. Well I'm assuming the charger that comes with the Chromebook is a 2A/10W one, but yes a 1A/5W would be slow to charge.

 

That'll teach me to drink my coffee before approaching the keyboard
