Http Routing Setup

We are wanting to route an external IP address into the internal network. Ie, When someone types in external IP address, it resolves it to an interal IP Address. How do you go about doing this?

Can they not just type the external IP?

the external IP address does not work inside school. Am thinking if external IP is typed in it would re-direct to internal IP.

Sorry but if typing in the external ip address doesn't work from inside school how is translating an internal ip address into this external one within school going to help?

 

If you cannot access a website by it's ip address you need to resolve that issue.

Sorry about that, i had the wrong end of the stick. If you read it now, it should make sense. If a kids types in the external IP address it should go to the internal IP address

The question beggs to be asked but why cant they just type the internal address or you setup a DNS redirect and they use a dns name instead?

I dunno, and ive been playing about with DNS all day, but not really getting anywhere with it

If you really want to redirect one IP to another you could use the HOSTS file.

Is this for external use or internal use? Could you please give us a broader view of what you have and what you are trying to achieve?

Yeah, ive added that in. Is there a nosts file on the sever for the whole of the network, which could be edited

Ahm not from 't Yorkshire la'd, ahm further up 't North!

 

Inside the network, you can't get the external IP address to be pointed towards an internal IP address.

 

However, you can create a hostname alias within DNS to resolve to the internal IP address - and just get users to access the server via the hostname alias instead of the external IP.
