VMware esxi 5.1 - no management interface

Hi,

 

Can anyone shed some light as to why when I rebooted the host server, the VMs start ok but the management interface don't work either by pinging the IP or through the vSphere client.

You need to check if the management network has lost its ip an that it is using the correct physical nic. This can be checked by using ILO onto the esx server and log in at the text console, then select management network. Check these settings and restart the management network.

If OP ha ILO/DRAC ..... other wise turn on/plug in montor and keyboard and look at the console.

Yes if no ILO use monitor and kbd in back of server

Everything is on screen and management IP is setup as before, checked nothing has changed.

 

The server is using two NICs one each VLAN.

 

Could it be the etc/hosts file causing the problem.

 

We don't use ILO, is it worth it?

Does the nic port have a link light on for the nic which hosts the management IP address? Have u checked the port is not error disabled on the switch? Have u checked the switch port is in the correct vlan? Once all this verified on the switch restart the management network on the host.

if your servers support ILO/DRAC/Other management interface then yes it's very much worth having set up.

 

If you can't physicaly get to the machine then being able to see what it's trying to do on it's console is very handy. You can also remote install, remote force reboot, etc..

Nic lights are flashing green as expected. Both VMs are on the host are vSwitched to separated vlans of which both nic are connected to. Both VMs work on the correct ip setup and according to my switch the port vlans are still the same as before.

 

Strange thing is that it was working for months then after a reboot stops.

 

Any one got a quick guide to setup ILO easily.

what brand of machine is it?

 

Dell and HP have a message during post ( usualy after the SETUP and before the SCSI/RAID controllers )

 

 

 

 

the management network can be disadled enabled on the console, it can also be tested ( ping it's gateway and something on another vlan )

 

If it can ping it's gateway then I would suspect routing in your network is wrong.

 

If it can't ping it's gateway then I would suspect the MGT interface settings are wrong for the vlan or not functional. Check them, if they are right change them and then change them back to force an update.

Form what you say, I take it one of the VM's is on the same subnet/vlan as the management network.

Correct rob, so I know the gateways for both are correct.

 

I might have to force an update as described in previous post.

 

Also does anyone know why the four fans in a HP ML350P gen8 would randomly spin up and down?

 

All temps are ok and have looked at the info provided in VMware health check, greens all round. Is it worth resetting then cram using the system maintenance switch on the mobo?
