Folder password protection

Is there a good way to password protect folders in W8. It is being used as a file server here in a school.

I might be being thick here or not explaining properly.

 

We have a load of XP machines needing to access certain areas on the D drive of the W8 machine. They are on the same workgroup and I have them all seeing each other. What I need is a password pop up if a pupil tries to access the Admin folder or Teacher's folder.

 

I can see how to restrict for users logging into the W8 machine but not into shared folders from the XPs.

Back in the UK now.

 

This W8 machine was setup before I arrived. There is no AD. I have to keep it simple as the person who looks after the It as best he can, on a voluntary basis (like most of the staff) is not that IT literate.

 

This was the first time I had worked with W8. I tried a piece of software that asked for a password but I found it too confusing for children who at best would currently get 1/2 hour a week on a PC.

I'm so lazy that I aways use a paid password protect folders program to protect all of important files or folders in my PC， It works well so far. Of course it's compatible with win8.

 

Probably just what I'm looking for, and cheap enough (I raised some funds for the school in the summer)
