I'd strongly encourage that you make sure you have good backups as a first step.

I'd then recommend you use the hard disk vendor's disk check tool to give a second opinion (against HDD regenerator v2011) on whether there is a problem with the disk.

A new disk may well be needed.

If you have a backup of all important data that you require prior to doing either or both of the below

1. Running the check disk utility ( chkdsk ) - Run Check Disk from a Command Line to Check for and fix Disk Errors

Depending on which OS you are using it may be advisable to either do this from the windows pe enviroment and then launching the command prompt to do this ( ensuring you are running the check disk against the correct hard drive / partition or if XP then using the recovery console. There may even be another utility or bootable cd you could use within parted magic or the likes.

2. Run a full format on the hard drive which may take at least an hour possibly longer ( which depending on if it is software related or hardware related should as far as I know and I could be wrong on this ignore the bad sectors )

There is or are hard drive tests within parted magic that you can run which should advise you with regards to the hard drive however the manufacturer utils as mentioned above will be more reliable / better tests and if these advise that there is or are issues with the disk then you will be better off getting a new drive ( whether it be a normal hard drive, a hybrid drive such as the seagate momentus XT or a flash based drive ie SSD )

Hope that helps some what.

fail test

I wouldn't want to use a hard drive that has failed the manufacturers diagnostic tests. Is your Dell laptop still under warranty?
