Remember also that in this instance, YOU will be liable for the damage to the car in front, not the idiot at the very back who was tailgating you. They are responsible for the damage to their car and the back of yours, but your insurance company will more than likely rule that you are responsible for the damage to the front of your car and the car in front, as you were driving too close. Strange, but true.

As far as I know this is out of date, it was back in the midst of time but because of an increase of line shunting dues to one persons negligence and also insurance fraud relying on this "loophole" it is becoming less and less used.

Not sure - I think a friend of mine got done when he was the middle car in a shunt at some traffic lights; the insurers deemed he should have had his handbrake on. Possibly that's different because of the different situation though, i.e. stationary v moving shunts.
