Software Deployment

Hi I have been looking at our GPO structure and it's a bit of a mess. I am looking into software deployment and was thinking about moving away from group policy. How do other schools manage software deployment, third party solutions etc.

SCCM, windows based, can do it with ease, plus gives you a chance to build a standard image which can be deployed to any machine, just pick drivers and go.

Another SCCM user here. Its really good and very cheap for schools.

Can't say i have. Another good thing with SCCM is if you have EEES you can use the AV product with it for no extra cost!

You don't need sccm to use forefront though it may give you a bit more control and reporting.

 

I use gpo and pdq deploy for s/w installs.

How is PDQ for deployment of software?

Pdq deploy can deploy most software that will run silently. You can run with the system account but your installation files need to have permissions set according. Pdq inventory scans pcs and you can run reports, wol etc. Sccm is a beast to install. But you have the advantage that its not 3rd party. You have the deployment of os, applications and a remote viewer. You also get the reporting. I use the free pdq deploy and inventory. Sccm does take a lot of testing to get it right. You also have the advantage of a Internet facing dp for laptops/devices.

we use pdq to deploy to our citrix servers. Its very good for this.

Less good for traditional clients as you need to make sure they are powered on.

Moving to Enterprise Software.

in our company, were trying WAPT made by a French startup. This software lets you deploy windows software remotely from a console. It also allows you to match the software configuration to what you need (ex: removing automatic updates on firefox, java, or advanced configuration of a business application).
