Our salesman was in this morning and told us.

 

We don't have any of their hardware as it was seen as expensive, though I always thought it pretty sound.

 

They're going through now what the big iron vendors went through in the 90s. Will they be an IBM or an NCR?

A shame for the people losing their jobs, but RM should have got out of the system building game a long time ago. Their kit hasn't been particularly cheap for a long time and lot of it was utter tat.

At least now, I don't have to get RM kit any more. [Not that I did anyway... but there was always someone who suggested it.]

I have still got 3 RM 9u servers, with a working CC3 platform and XP client build stood doing nothing but worked for 5 years plus and is still in excellent order throughout.

 

Dual Pentium 3 processors.

 

I may keep them now for prosperity hehe!

 

I have never bought hardware which RM have made although from reports that I have had it has always seemed to be very reliable although a tad expensive.

 

RM as a company have always tried very hard to give a good service for the education market and I personally feel that they went in the wrong direction regarding the BSF contracts as they saw these as quite lucrative at the time, most BSF contracts are up for tender or have converted to Academy's which has forced RM's hand in making what seems to be a downward but necessary cut in staff, note that it is temporary staff and those with short term contracts, which any company would sacrifice in times of austerity.

 

All companies are feeling the pinch and staff are always the first to go.

 

Its a shame but these are very hard times from a financial viewpoint for companies alike.

Usually the middle management jobs are first with maybe one or 2 of the higher end jobs but no-one ever gets to hear about them as it's always good for the media to report that it's the lower end workers who are getting the chop as it sells newspapers and is good TV.

I agree completely with your first two points but their hardware was well put together and well thought out. If nothing else this has restricted my options of buying computers I know will stand up to the rigors of the classroom environment.
