What the proper method of doing a p2v for an XP domain PC in a VMware Vsphere environment?

I run the VMware converter tool and after it completes I shut down the physical PC. I'm not sure of two things:

Getting Windows license reactivation notice and when I try the activate over the internet option it says the producet key is invalid. Same when I call MS and go through the automated option.

Sysprep - I see many forums talking about it but in this case I'm just converting one PC not a master to clone for many roll outs so do I still have to do it? Or can I just dis-join and rejoin the domain?

Hi blan,

Welcome to Edugeek :)

This is normal when you p2v because underneath the 'hardware' is still changing, admittedly it's changing from the physical PC chassis to a 'vmware virtual' one but it's still a change, and still enough for the activation to kick off.

If you're finding it isn't working with your key any longer, it may be because the key was OEM and it's not playing ball nicely with the different underlying hardware.

Do you have any volume license keys (VLK) kicking around for XP? That may be your best bet.

If you're just doing this for a single machine I wouldn't worry about sysprep.
