imunro01 Posted October 3, 2013 Posted October 3, 2013 Folks, hope you can offer advice:- I'm receiving a lot of reports from one classroom stating the internet connection is poor, pages crashing or not loading, squid proxy errors etc. I've worked with our proxy provider to overcome a couple of issues with the proxy setup, however I need to run some tests from PCs in that room to see if I can identify any issues. The classroom switch is 100Mbs procurve, droppingto a 1Gbps procurve backbone - 3 hops to the proxy (one of which is gig fibre) Speedtest shows reasonable figures, however obviously that is only part of the picture. What other tests woudl you advise running? I'm thinking DNS resolution as a start, and a prolonged ping to check for packet loss. Also, what tools would you recommend for running these tests?
OB1 Posted October 4, 2013 Posted October 4, 2013 (edited) Wireshark on the PC(s) having the problems. This will show up packet loss and other issues, and is generally an awesome tool for network troubleshooting. It can be scary though... Edited October 4, 2013 by OB1

OB1 Posted October 4, 2013 Posted October 4, 2013 o_0 ..thanks for the heads up... The first time I saw all that traffic scrolling past in pretty colours I felt like I was in way over my head, but once you read the tutorial and get your head around some basics it's amazingly powerful. It's like a car. Much faster than walking, but you have to learn how to use one first.
plexer Posted October 4, 2013 Posted October 4, 2013 @OB1 I think it was more the fact that you actually wrote "I can be scary though" rather than "It can be scary though" Ben
