SCCM - Help

Hi All

 

Is SCCM included in windows server 2012? If not how do I go about gaining access to it?

 

I am relatively new to IT but have found myself wanting to know more.

 

I am due to start a Windows 7 course soon to further my knowledge on desktop etc however, i would like to know more about active directory and SCCM.

 

There are courses in this I know, but I thought theres nothing stopping me from using at home.

 

any help and advice is greatly appreciated.

sccm is a seperate product, that runs on windows.

if you have a technet subscription you can probably get a non-eval version,

 

use the official eval version as thats exactly what you want to do evaluate it. don't download a pirated version via torrent or similar is most likely contains viruses.

On a side note, if your new in IT i really wouldn't look at SCCM yet. Its complex. Covers loads of areas. Even the install requires a good knowledge.

Absolutely. SCCM relies very heavily on a lot that goes on behind the scenes in windows networks so it makes absolutely sense that you must start with them. Active Directory and other domain services, security, setting up SQL correctly, MDT, WSUS and loads more. If you don't know those inside out before tackling SCCM, it will be near impossible to learn anything from it.

Even the install requires a good knowledge.

That's one of the reasons why Microsoft created the PowerShell Deployment Toolkit. This enables you to setup a fully working SCCM 2012 SP1/2012 R2 Preview installation (in a non-production environment) within a matter of hours.

 

It's definitely a good idea to learn how to install SCCM properly, but it is by no means essential (at least to start with).

Absolutely, but you still shouldn't go ahead without knowing how AD is helping it work otherwise even the simple stuff like boundaries, collections and discovery methods will look like nightmares. You wouldn't build a car for the first time without knowing what the parts vaguely do first!
