HELP: Exch2007 (two servers) main box has died how do I move all of the roles over?

I have a major problem I have two servers running exchange 2007. Exch1 and Exch2 I name them. Exch1 used to have all the mailboxes and was the incoming and outgoing smtp relay as well as the OWA site. After a major issue Exch1 would no longer search through mailboxes having had several Microsoft engineers remote in after five days we called it quits and created Exch2 moved over all of the mailboxes but left the rest with Exch1 everything has been fine until now Exch1 blue screened and I cannot get it to repair as it was running OWA externally and was the incoming and outgoing server this needs to be migrated over to Exch2 can anyone tell me how I may go about this as the backups have been of no use looks like whatever caused this has had repercussions for the backups on this server as well. Exch2 I've tried and the backups are fine on this as well so Exch1 is hosed I think.

Lots of the Exchange server config is stored in AD these days

 

build a new one named the same as the dead server - then read: Recovering an Exchange 2007 Server using the RecoverServer switch :: High Availability & Recovery :: Exchange 2007 Articles :: Articles & Tutorials :: MSExchange.org

 

you'll then need to readd certificates, etc

I've tried resetting the server account in AD but I get an error when trying to join the domain with the old server name?

The failed server is switched off right? Is replication working between all your DCs?

 

Is the new server one that's already been domain joined? might be worth putting it in a workgroup first then rebooting and retrying

It has been the old one is off as well. I'll try putting it in a workgroup and rejoining as well.

Right well that hasn't worked. Is there any way of just removing this exchange box and making the second one the primary Exchange Server? Outlook 20xx still looks to the first server to connect even though the accounts are told to look at the second?

You'll have to run setup and add the required roles. Also reconfigure the transports to forward the mail correctly, reconfigure any publishing for webmail etc. With regard to clients, are they configured for autodiscover?
