FishCustard Posted July 25, 2013 Posted July 25, 2013 Huge achievement announced by BC ministry, Aspen chosen as MIS for circa 600,000 student 1800 school province. This: good! One database!! This: bad! (I think... maybe I'm too used to SIMS, but something about this gives me that 'do not want' feeling. I'm guessing there will be SQL server clustering going on, etc?)
GREED Posted July 25, 2013 Author Posted July 25, 2013 In terms of the physical database yes there will be for performance and redundancy. From a user perspective it is one database carefully controlled so each school only sees information pertinent to them. This is how Aspen works in a multi tenancy scenario, or groups of schools and trust groups, districts or provinces and beyond.
FishCustard Posted July 25, 2013 Posted July 25, 2013 To be honest, now I re-read it all, I'm not sure. There's no reason why it should pose problems if done right (which I have absolutely no doubt it will be) - I suppose I've just seen so many drunken-monkey DB desings that my brain conflated 'one massive database' with 'one massive table' or other WTFs on instinct.
CAM Posted July 26, 2013 Posted July 26, 2013 Congratulations guys, that's one big contract. Imagine more then one data manager will be involved in keeping that running.
