Koldov Posted July 12, 2013 Posted July 12, 2013 Hi all, Starting nice and early today! Not sure where to post this as it has elements of 7, security and hardware. But here goes... Already had a teacher in my office, laptop in hand (and she's kind of my boss too!). So anyway, it has a years work on it possibly not all backed up and she has not done anything to cause it (of course). BSOD with the error in the title BAD_SYSTEM_CONFIG_INFO, disk is encrypted with Truecrypt, so I can't pull it to gain access to the contents and back it up. So far I have tried the usual SAFE MODE, START UP REPAIR/REPAIR YOUR COMPUTER, LAST KNOWN GOOD CONFIGURATION. Google is pointing to registry/hive corruption, is it worth trying to decrypt the disk or will it make things worse (is that possible) if the hard drive is failing? Don't have a 7 disk to hand but can get one. I need to try to get the data off before I do anything that 'might' kill it completely though (wouldn't be the first time I've typed in something like FIXBOOT/FIXMBR and never seen that installation of Windows again lol). Anybody seen this and recovered it? Kol.

mac_shinobi Posted July 12, 2013 Posted July 12, 2013 As you said backup any / all data you need, then if needed de-crypt the drive ( run relevant diagnostics both chkdsk x: /r and the hard drive manufacturer diagnostic disc etc ) to ensure the hard drive is ok and if so re image / re install / re activate etc etc ( usual process )
Koldov Posted July 12, 2013 Author Posted July 12, 2013 More links: Let me google that for you Haha! So funny and really helpful, thanks! Unfortunately, my first post indicated I had already skimmed Google and what it appears to be from the first few post I'd already seen, but most of them have msconfig issues they've caused themselves and I'm ruling that out for now. Thought I might try to ask the helpful folk here first and maybe they could answer the question. Sometimes, just the right person will see the post and say 'Oh yeah, I had that the other day and fixed it with X, Y or Z' or 'it's a known issue with that and you have do this to fix it'. That's partly what this forum is for, no? Go and Google it isn't really what I was hoping for, but thanks for the time and effort you've spent creating your post, have a nice Friday, I'm sure mine will be fun. Kol.
Koldov Posted July 12, 2013 Author Posted July 12, 2013 Believe it or not I was trying to be helpful. Hmmmmm, lol ok maybe this once... But my head is spinning from Google already this morning and it's the last thing I needed to hear! Was hoping that someone may have been able to help a little more directly that's all. No worries. Kol.

Unless you know a way around that? Kol.
tech_guy Posted July 12, 2013 Posted July 12, 2013 Are you able to get at it by booting from an Ubuntu live-cd?
Koldov Posted July 12, 2013 Author Posted July 12, 2013 Are you able to get at it by booting from an Ubuntu live-cd? I have a Debian Live USB, didn't think of that (as that would make the point of me encrypting the disk pointless)... Would that have worked? Anyway thanks for all the suggestions, I've started the decryption now as it will take hours. Hopefully once it has decrypted I can pull the disk and do a back-up before I return to trying to fix Windows FWIW. Kol. 1

Then just a case of establishing how to use true crypt on the working pc to get it to prompt you for the password / recovery key so as to decrypt or suspend encryption to give you access to the data unless like already suggested you can use a linux live disc that will either 1.) already have truecrypt as apart of the linux live disc 2.) maybe allow you to install truecrypt
Koldov Posted July 12, 2013 Author Posted July 12, 2013 That's what I was thinking and would do first. Well, that would have been a very helpful first response then wouldn't it?! Anyhow, I jumped the gun and started decrypting and now I only have 90GB to go.... So I guess it will finish well after home time and on a Friday too Anybody know if Truecrypt plays nice with interrupted (half disk) decryption? Although I'm sure it's not best practise and not even saying I could actually get these to work: Sorry - an external hard drive caddy kit and connect to a working pc. Koldov Posted July 12, 2013 Author Posted July 12, 2013 Oh dear... Remaining: 67749 MB Read error:16 Drive:0 Sector:138749796 Skip all bad sectors? (y/n): Kol.
ADMaster Posted July 12, 2013 Posted July 12, 2013 This is the main reason I never implemented full disk encryption. I typically connect the drive to a USB caddy was well to pull data. Something to try the next time is a disk image. Boot into a live CD and copy the entire disk to the server an decrypt there. This would hopefully save the drive just a bit if it was failing.
Foresthippy Posted July 12, 2013 Posted July 12, 2013 If you want to mount a trucrypted drive from a boot cd, you can. I have a bart PE disk which I've added the truecrypt exe to and have rescued several peoples work from unbootable encrypted laptops. The process for making a bart pe disk with truecrypt is described here: TrueCrypt - FAQ (answers to frequently asked questions) about half-way down the page.
