SCCM 2012 on 2008r

Hi.

 

Can someone give me their view on SCCM 2012 running on 2008?

 

Right now we use Norton Ghost for our Imaging solution and although I like the ease of its use I think things are still a little more labor intensive then they need to be.

How will SCCM help with Imaging?

SCCM 2012 SP1 will run perfectly happily on 2008 R2.

 

If you're just using it for imaging, it's way way WAY overboard. It's not worth the effort unless you're going to use it to its full capabilities. You'd be better off looking at MDT instead. However, if you use its other functionality it's completely worth the effort.

I think SCCM2012 came out before Server 2012 anyway - certainly the beta did. I'm running it here on 2008R2 and it's fine.

The deployment aspect is one thing that I'm looking to enhance with SCCM. We have a huge collection of software and a large collection of verious hardware I want to maintain along with it so its by no means for the purpose of WDS.

 

How has SCCM helped with maintaining Drivers for those amoung who use it well for this purpose as well?

SCCM's featureset stops pretty much at making you a cup of tea after a good day at work. All of your boxes easily ticked. It can be as simple as you like or as advanced as you want to get; this will scale from 100 computers to 10,000 computers without batting an eyelid. It handles drivers in a very similar way to software packages, task sequencing works well, and MDT integrates with it if you're already familiar with that. Handles WSUS and WDS under the same roof.
