Security Permissions Missing

Several times I've had this problem on a Windows 2000 Server, if any1 has any idea as to what causes it or how to fix it, that'd be gr8.

 

Basically when i right click the file in question and click properties, all tabs except the 'General' tab is missing. This stops me from deleting the file! I read somewhere its due to something to do with files being moved from FAT16/32 or something, but this has happened with pupils work and its stopped me from moving the homefolders to another server... since these files cant be accessed.

 

This image shows what i mean, but isnt the actual file that it happened with (i cant remember which student it was).

You do still have full permissions on the file in question?

 

I've noticed that this happens occasionally if you view UNC paths.

No only the general tab is there, so i cant even check permissions! Nothing works, cant delete the file, cant take ownership or anything.

 

Ive looked on that 'essential software' list and found a program that deletes any file.. i'll give that a go, n let u know how it goes!

Sounds like the disk isn't formatted to NTFS. What drives are the files on? I've had a few USB hard drives catch me out with this.

That sounds right, but all other files have the other tabs, including the sec perms tab.

 

The hdd is part of the raid-5 array on the server, and its formatted to ntfs.

I doubt you can- but have you tried taking ownership of the file at directory level? If you have and you got an "access denied" or similar error, you could try a command line attack and change the permissions there (the link below takes you to a MS tool to do this with).

I had trouble with Subinacl when I tried it for this task a while ago. I ended up using the windows version of chown which I use in various scripts as it's simple to use and did exactly what it said on the tin.

Kingswood, thanks for the great suggestion. I had tried that, but the file just didnt change. Similar I suppose to Windows 2000 and long filenames (when you have a really long filename in XP, you cant touch it in 2000).

 

I ended up creating a little VB app that deleted the file using API calls, it didnt even ask a question.. just deleted the damn thing

 

Prob is, i cant exactly do this to all the kids work.. but then again its not even being backed up, nor can it be opened, so tuff!!
