RabbieBurns Posted June 4, 2013 Posted June 4, 2013 Im trying to stream my webcam on my laptop through the local network using VLC. Ive found a few HOW-To online but none of them pertain to the latest version and I cannot match any of the options or settings they talk about to the latest version. I can get my webcam displaying locally nicely in VLC but cannot for the life of me figure out how to then stream that. Anyone got any updated documentation please?
jallsop Posted June 4, 2013 Posted June 4, 2013 Have you tried setting the stream file location to a common read write area on the network, and then point VLC to pick up the stream from that same file on the 'client' machines?
RabbieBurns Posted June 4, 2013 Author Posted June 4, 2013 I cant even find settings for 'stream file location' . I can only see how to open a stream not create one.
mac_shinobi Posted June 4, 2013 Posted June 4, 2013 (edited) I would presume - open vlc --> Media --> stream --> Capture Device From there assuming you have the driver etc installed for the web cam and the web cam is powered on and working ( as in you have tested the web cam works ok and then close down any apps that use or you did use to test the webcam works down ) I would presume that it will be in the drop down as one of the devices or you can set the webcam as the device to stream from ?? Found this : http://hackyogi.com/vlc-player-tricks/ Not sure which sites you came across or what ones you found, would be interesting to see what ones you have looked at already Edited June 4, 2013 by mac_shinobi
RabbieBurns Posted June 4, 2013 Author Posted June 4, 2013 yep thats the bit ive figured out. what do i do at the receiving end. What protocol does it stream? http? rtsp? What is the port? Where do I set all that? 1
mac_shinobi Posted June 4, 2013 Posted June 4, 2013 When you are streaming locally ok how have you got that setup with what protocols and what did you do to get that working ? I would guess it would be a case of finding out what port that protocol uses and port forwarding it over your router to allow that traffic outbound etc ?
RabbieBurns Posted June 4, 2013 Author Posted June 4, 2013 I have just found that when you set up the stream, instead of pressing the Play button, if you press the down arrow, it brings up the missing menu I have been looking for! And i only clicked it by accident. 1
RabbieBurns Posted June 4, 2013 Author Posted June 4, 2013 I have literealy spent 30 whole minutes looking for that
