Wireless not working

Another great day battling with Vista, sorry, Windows 8

 

Got my HP650 latop working with Windows8 again. Installed all the drivers from the painfully slow HP website and generally all working. Apart from wireless. Correct drivers installed but simply 'No networks found' either at work or at home. And my home network is working fine as there are phones,laptops,ipads and other laptops all connected happily.

 

So another buggy install - correct drivers and no way of resolving this as far as I can see. I'm amazed this POS ever got as far as release!

 

Wireless - fail

IE10 - fail (Enter key randomly works)

Desktop - a mess. Icons resizing every boot, or taking forever to appear

Metro - don't get me started, did MS actually show anyone outside the company this mishmash of a GUI?

 

I've got soooo frustrated with windows8 this last few weeks, its thwarted me at just about every turn. Windows 7 introduced a load of annoyances but I could usually work around those!

If the HP650 you have is using an Atheros wireless adapter, make sure you're running the latest drivers. They make a huge difference! Driver version 10.0.0.234 running Win 7 x86, but should in theory be the same for Win 8 Just check the adapter's on the list.

Its the latest Win8 one from HP - and doesn't work. I've had Win7 and Suse 12.3 on the same laptop and the adaptor works fine with them

If you install Win 8 fresh rather than use HP's image, does it work?

It was a fresh image - I lost the HP image after trying to dual boot windows8 with suse!

So is it an Atheros adapter or another brand out of curiosity? Clearly from your testing this is a driver issue and not a hardware issue.

It's an Ralink adaptor apparently. Tried lots of drivers now and all the same result. Looks like its back to sues and windows 7 dual booting!

I've now tried Win7 32/64 and Win8 32/64 for this laptop - using three HP models (although the identical drivers!)

 

This is a right pain, the drivers appear to be loading ok - its just that Windows 8 cannot see a wireless network - not one, even though at home I'm in range of 4 including mine, and at work it should see about 3!

Have you tried in both 2.4GHz and 5GHz modes?

This getting more and more bizarre. Reinstalled Win8 - wireless works. Joined to domain (no GPO's applied) and wireless stops detecting networks. Disjoin from domain and wireless networks appear again!

You will have problems if you are trying to connect to a Cisco Wireless network. There has been problems with Win 8 identifying the Cisco handshake protocol. The solution to that is to either upgrade your Cisco wireless controller or install the windows 7 wireless drivers.
