Exchange 2010 backup/restore question

I've setup a single Ex2K10 server and am about to start a migrate from our old trusty Ex2K3 server.

 

At the moment the file structure on the Ex2K10 server is split so the log files are on drive D and the mailbox databases are on drive E (separate physical devices)

 

I'm using the inbuilt W2K8r2 backup software to produce a .vhd every night which is then copied to two NAS's stored in separate buildings as far away from the server as physically possible (fire, flood, locust etc). I'm backing up both the logs and the databases.

 

Just checking that by splitting the logs away from the databases (the default path on install suggests putting them both off the same directory root) I'm not giving myself issues further down the line if I want to do single user restores etc.

 

Should I be going:

 

d:\exchange\logs\*

e:\exchange\databases\*

 

or

 

e:\exchange\logs\*

e:\exchange\databases\*

 

Or doesn't it really matter as long as I backup both?

You need to backup using the exchange option not as vhd files.

Logs and databases should NOT be on the same Hard drive.

 

This is because writes to the log file are sequential, whereas writes to the database file are non-sequential.

 

If they are housed on the same disk you may see a performance impact.

Some deployment s have it on t same disk, this depends on disk attributes, however that can be expensive and not recommended if you just have 1 exchange server.
