Website Query

Hi there,

 

I have been asked to find out how to create a web page that in effect acts like the new tab feature in some browsers where you can see a number of visited websites summarised ready for you to click on.

 

The person would like to only have specific websites visible though.

 

Can this be done?

Not sure I understand? Could you not use favorites\bookmark bar in your browser

You know when you click on new tab in IE or Firefox you are then presented with a new page that has a grid of 9 or so previous sites you have visited. Well he wants this but he wants the sites that are visible to be ones he specifically wants people to see.

 

I think he wants to do it as some sort of intranet thing!

Our new "intranet" is basically a web page that contains various tabs. Each tab has a web page loaded, the most frequently visited sites in school: Fronter, Google, School website, Autology and two tabs of links to various shared folders on the network. The intranet page is everyone's default, so they're able to access the most common sites in 1 click.

 

Is that what you meant, or are these "tabs" to be more dynamic, changing as the websites in question increase/decrease in popularity?

Depending how often he wants them to change, you could just shove a bunch of screenshots of the websites he wants and stick them in a grid on a page, each linked to the respective website.

Not a bad idea as a last resort.

If he wants the website to change often, that'll mean editing the code frequently. Honestly I think using a browser's built in function as mentioned above would be better.

 

We wanted something similar, I've uploaded our page as a sample and redacted the information: our intranet page

 

As it uses iframes in full page tabs, the pages will load live. It's relatively straightforward to add more tabs. No CMS necessary, as it's just 1 page of HTML. As you correctly surmised, trying to cram 9 pages in iframes will result in scrollbars and a generally unreadable window.

 

A decent sized monitor could fit a good number of tabs up there.
