Smoothwall Speed

Hi, we have (had) a smoothwall utm 1000 and always thought since changing it to doing the firewall and guardian it struggled and Internet seemed well not great or as good as when we were just using the smoothwall as a firewall.

One thing I noticed was that if I turned off guardian then the speed dramatically improved. So... Fast forward to this week and we bought a new UTM 3000 to cope with some future expansion and everything was running nicely until I enable the transparent proxy and guardian and it started acting sluggish... So my query now is I wonder if there are some settings that aren't right on my config. Any ideas if anyone has seen this type of activity before ?

Have you got the latest updates installed? Main updates 52 and 53? We were having issues with ours being sluggish etc and since those updates which include a large number of performance target updates ours seems to have stopped dragging its ass and sped up a bit.

Have You got a transparent proxy enabled ?

Are you transparently intercepting HTTPS on your transparent interface?

 

Do you have Anti-malware enabled?

 

Either of those two things can have an impact on speed - malware scanning especially as if you are scanning all content, even benign 'web content' stuff then this will use a lot of helpers.

 

If you are intercepting HTTPS transparently, what OS are the clients coming in on - Windows XP clients don't support the protocol so if you are seeing slowness on those clients you might need to switch it off (for example).
