EES Licencing

Could somebody please explain EES licencing to me,

 

I have had a quote from Pheonix Software for a 3 year agreement and was told it includes all OS with the exception of SQL, I was also told that it does not include Cals. I was then informed that if I paid my subscription each year for the 3 years then at the end of it I wanted to cancel I could come out of the agreement at no extra charge.

 

I then got a quote from another company who said the EES agreement does include Cals and if you leave at the end of the agreement you then have to pay for all the licences you have used.

 

If I don’t have to pay anything other than the agreement price each year this will work out good for us, if there is an additional cost after the agreement has ended then we might as well just purchase the licences as and when required.

This works out much cheaper for us than EES over 6yrs because we buy hardware with windows OEM licenses and don't have office on all of the machines.

 

AFAIK EES includes Windows, MSOffice, Windows server and server CALS. Everything else is extra. If you stop paying you need to stop using it.

EES is based on the number of full time staff or devices (I think). You do need to provide them with this number and this is how the price is generated. If you have a quote for this it should not require extra CALs and should cover the installation of the covered standard servers. There are exceptions like the advanced features of exchange or terminal services that do require CALs over and above. I could be wrong but this is my understanding.

 

As above, when your agreement ends you need to renew it or stop using it. The benifit is that you always have access to the latest versions so you are not stuck with a really old and unpatchable system by the end of it. This also means that when a new thing comes out that you want to use you do not have to wait forever to refresh all your hardware up to that liscence level to get it.

What exactly did Pheonix quote you for?

 

Possible they just quoted you for Windows 8 Pro on an EES agreement rather then the Educational Desktop (educational desktop includes the core cal pack and windows 8 upgrade)
