Because their bosses would likely fire them for it for 'devaluing the company' or some such nonsense, despite the fact that we'd all appreciate the honesty more.

 

In all fairness, they could be adding new functionality. You'll have to wait and see when it's back up. Although, realistically, nobody does updates that will take down the service during the day, if they can help it. Unless it's fixing an urgent security hole.
