Hi all;

 

New to this site as a poster although I do watch quite often from afar!

 

Basically, I have finally been given some money to go down the VDI route at my school, but where do I start?

We use some 10zig clients with our VDIs but not what they are advertising.

I hadn't even thought about the desktop devices yet, I will probably get something trialed on PC's first and see how we go.

 

What solution do you use?

We use WES 7 clients with a VDI Pool on Server 2012.

 

Some of the Linux clients looked good to but when we bought we wanted to use RDP 8 fully, and WES 7 was the only one at the time.

How many desktops, how many users, do you want remote access (from outside of school) too, how much have you got to spend, and most of all... what do you want to achieve with VDI?

 

Lots of options out there at varying price points. What have you got in the way of hardware at the moment (desktop and server) and are you planning/wanting to re-use any of it?

I would suggest starting by loading W2012 or W2008r2 (free trial software from Mircosoft.com) onto a server/PC you already have lying around, then

using either an existing PC or cheap (Ebay) thin client - connect to server with an RDP connection....

 

That will give you the base starting point (and certainly the lowest costing). Depending on how you find that as a solution you can then focus on the areas where you feel more attention is needed (ie performance, connecting over internet, cost, ease of management, application compatibilty?). There are many paths you can take from that point - but many schools find that solution (Terminal Services/RDS) is adequate, and is certainly lowest costing and least complex.

 

Most other solutions take the above as a starting point, and the add software layers to give benefits in one area or another
