RabbieBurns Posted March 22, 2013 Posted March 22, 2013 Am I right in thinking this is pretty damn fast?
SYNACK Posted March 22, 2013 Posted March 22, 2013 I can't get that on fixed line speed, there again I can't even get 3G where I am now so I shouldn't be supprised. It is way fast for the southern hemisphere.
sted Posted March 22, 2013 Posted March 22, 2013 id say so its 27 times faster than my landline and 3-4 times faster than my 3g mifi dongle
zag Posted March 22, 2013 Posted March 22, 2013 Ping time is still atrocious though, that's what really matters.
Guest Guest Posted March 22, 2013 Posted March 22, 2013 (edited) It's wide that's for sure. Is it fast though? IME latency, jitter, packet loss etc are more important now for the vast majority of uses. 143ms ping is really slow, but then speedtest isn't made to test latency. Out of interest I'd tether my laptop and do a pingtest.net Edited March 22, 2013 by Guest
RabbieBurns Posted March 22, 2013 Author Posted March 22, 2013 It's wide that's for sure. Is it fast though? It loads apps like the BBC news app really quick, but its a lot better hardware than my previous phone (HTC HD2 running Jellybean) as well so Im not sure which of the performance increases are down to a better spec phone and which is due to the speed of the network. Streaminig from youtube etc seems OK though.

glennda Posted March 22, 2013 Posted March 22, 2013 Ping time is still atrocious though, that's what really matters. You should trying working on the server I am in Oman - latency is 290ms... slow!!
SYNACK Posted March 22, 2013 Posted March 22, 2013 You should trying working on the server I am in Oman - latency is 290ms... slow!! I get a 330ms ping to edugeek and that is way faster than it used to be.
glennda Posted March 22, 2013 Posted March 22, 2013 I get a 330ms ping to edugeek and that is way faster than it used to be. Ouch! and some more text to make it happy
RabbieBurns Posted March 22, 2013 Author Posted March 22, 2013 So what is your new phone? HTC Velocity
andrew_91090 Posted March 22, 2013 Posted March 22, 2013 Mine's not even close to that PING: 68ms DOWNLOAD: 845.1 kB/s UPLOAD: 262.5 kB/s
ZeroHour Posted March 22, 2013 Posted March 22, 2013 Ping is amazingly important for webpage loading, having decent bandwidth is good but latency really kills all as a poorly configured webserver (apache users mostly... ) will cause very slow loading when trying to pull in images/page elements. Norway has 4G that is so good people can play LoL (League of Legends) and fps games without issue along with a skype call and no noticeable ping issue at all so it is possible.
RabbieBurns Posted March 23, 2013 Author Posted March 23, 2013 bit better today outside of office hours:
truebluesteve Posted March 23, 2013 Posted March 23, 2013 Interesting that Stephen Fry was tweeting yesterday how poor his 4G in central LA was! I'd be quite thankful for a decent 3G connection where I live!
