eBooks in school

We have been allocated a pot of money (c.£7K) to target Y7 pupils that didn't make L4 Sats last year. One of the ideas was to get some Kindle type eBooks that might make them more enthusiastic about reading. I know there were several issues with Kindle in the number of concurrent machines that could access the same book and also downloading via a proxy server.

 

Has anyone else done something similar and can offer advice please?

Havent look into this properly myself but it seems to be bouncing around the forums and I know of it. Its more about software that goes onto a device iphone/android/pc/mac etc I think, correct me if I am wrong. Hope that helps in someway.

Just as an anecdote, my mum (retired teacher) tutors and has had considerable success getting children who are uninterested in books to use an e-reader. It does depend on the child, of course.

This is what we are hoping. I guess there will be an initial novelty period but some will stick with it.

There are restrictions on the number of Kindles you can register to a single account (iirc it's 6). Try Calibre for content management. There are lots of drm free books on there, but one of the best features for running lots of devices is that you can sync them all to the same place.

 

Equally, even using an Amazon account, you get 6 copies for the price of one. It's still a pain to manage them though...
