Reminds me when I went to Egypt a few years ago. Some Egyptian feller at the hotel was after a lighter. He come upto me and said "Have you got fire I can borrow"

Translation is fun. The German word for lighter, "Feuerzeug", translates literally as "fire thing". Other fun examples are "Warteschlange" for queue ("waiting snake") and "Glühbirne" for light bulb ("glow pear").

I lived in Germany for a few years. My kids (and me secretly) found it funny whenever we were told to have a "gute fahrt"

 

gute fahrt = good ride = good journey or safe journey.

And also the German for television "Fernseher" which translates something like "Far away see-er" IIRC?
