windows8tester Posted February 17, 2013 Posted February 17, 2013 Can anyone confirm whether Windows Server 2012 is required for controlling group policy for Windows 8? Or can it be done with 2003 / 2008 / 2008R2? Thanks
FN-GM Posted February 17, 2013 Posted February 17, 2013 It can be done yes, just edit the group policy object from a Windows 8 machine. I wouldn't use server 2003 as support it ending shortly. 1

Are Microsoft likely to release an update that will allow modifications from the server? Thanks
FN-GM Posted February 17, 2013 Posted February 17, 2013 Have you ever edited a group policy object before? They will not release anything to allow you to do the from the server. Ideally things like this should be done on a client machine byway and not directly on the server.
windows8tester Posted February 17, 2013 Author Posted February 17, 2013 I have made a few minor tweaks before, for earlier versions of Windows. Things like IE proxy settings, preventing access to Control Panel, that sort of thing. I always did this from the server using Group Policy Editor. Do MS recommend only doing this from clients?
FN-GM Posted February 17, 2013 Posted February 17, 2013 Well it's generally recommended not to work directly on a server for anything. Most is can be done remotely. Something's of require working directly on the server like installing apps. You install the Windows 8 remote administration tools (google that) install it and then do you group policy form the Windows 8 machine asif you was on the server itself. 1
