I recent problem has started to happen on quite a few machines within our school and that is SIMS.net will hang when you use any drop down menu. As this has happened to a few machines, I am assuming that the problem is either with a recent update or something on the server but I have been unable to locate the problem.

If I do a full reinstall on the client, it will work for about an hour but then go back to hanging as soon as you use the drop down menu.

I have been looking into this for some time so any help will be greatly received.

I've not noticed that problem here so can't be of much help, but just off the top of my head, is there any correlation between problem machines and .NET version installed on said machines?

We have just has a client .Net update to version 4 and this was happening before and is still happening now so Client .Net is ruled out. Good idea though as this was one of the many fixes I have tried.

Tried turning AV off?

Tried that and still the same. I have also tried to reinstall .net frameworks (various versions), log in as another user, reinstall SP3 but nothing has worked yet.

Does this happen on the server? In your connect.ini do you have a commandtimeout?

No, only on some clients and the INI line is CommandTimeout=100000

What spec are the machines? If you ping the server for say, 2 mins, do you get any drop packets? Anything about 1 ms response time?

Very different machines but some are very high spec. Also we have recently upgraded to fibre on the switches so nothing will have a slow ping. The latest machine to have this problem was E8500 processor with 4gb.

What about the user, have they tried on another machine to see if it happens? Perhaps apply the reindexing patch?

EDIT:

Could be a faulty fibre cable or miss configuration, we had problem with a switch with a missing static route a while back.

My SIMS menus are the quickest out of all my applications! I did once have some users who suffered from something similar, coupled with a lot of flickering of the SIMS app. It turned out to be a background task, constantly taking focus and releasing it, or just flashing away behind the scenes.

It might be something local to the machines. Did you turn off AV at server and client side?

Also, can you try it on an empty machine without other apps installed, or maybe in safe mode [does sims even work in safe mode? maybe with networking..].
