[sims] Report of Class Membership

I want to run a report on SIMS which looks like:

Student A - English set 1 - Science set 1 - Spanish set 2 (i.e. their teaching groups)

Student B - English set 2 - Science set 2 - Spanish set 1

 

I know how to get a list of everyone in English Y and how to see on-screen all group memberships for a given pupil, but can't find a way to export a list of all pupils and their class groups.

 

Does anyone know if this is possible?

Use the new Student List Reports in SIMS. Available to all users.

Reports | Student List | General Student List

or, you can narrow it down by using the Class List or Reg Group option.

On General List however, you can add any number of filters to get the right student(s) then from the Data Area on right go to curriculum drop down and drag classes to the main screen. This populates all their classes.

Next hit Export and choose the Excel option.

Not what I'm after (although possibly helpful, as I didn't know you could export from that screen). What you describe gives me a list of which students are in group 7 English X. What I want is a list of all the groups which a particular student (or rather, every student in a year group) is in. So, rather than seeing, as you suggest, that Maths A comprises Fred, Bill and Bob, I want to know that Fred is in Maths A, English B and Science Z, and so on. The "Focus - School - Curriculum Assignment by Pupil" option does this, but that has to be done individually for each pupil and can't be exported.

I'm a little confused, i think the instructions i gave you are pupil-centric. i.e. a list of students down the page with columns representing each of their classes. Maybe i'm misunderstanding the problem still. TBH i've assumed the function does what i described and haven't looked closely at the output!

I don't mean that you should filter the list down to a class. Just filter it down to a group of students e.g. Y10. If you apply no filters you should (i think) get a list of subjects for every student on roll.

I was asked the very self same question by a member of our staff and although it seemed quite an easy ask it is not possible in Sims at this moment in time or so I have been told (if anyone does have the answer I will be grateful to them) but as it stands this is what I have come up against.

 

 

As you have stated enjay you can get it in singular student form but not for a group of students.

That sounds exactly what I'm after, although as you said in your next post, I need this to list all their subject classes, not just registration.

Okay, not sure I'm explaining myself very well, so to clear up confusion, I've mocked up what I'm after and attached it to this post.

I'm really lost, can someone explain the problem to me please. The curriculum assignment by pupil lists the classes for a student down the page.

My export puts a list of students down the page and their classes as columns along the top. This just needs transposing.

If you make a pivot table with all data as rows, it will move the class names beneath each student name, which is like having lots of curriculum assignment by pupil lists beneath eachother...

Mine isn't quite what you want, because you'd have to extract info from the class name field to get it into your format, though in principle it would work with a couple of formulas. Otherwise you have to rely on the fact that each student does every subject, and they appear alphabetically. So ok i guess for the bulk of KS3.

True, but it is close enough. From the content of a field, it is easy enough to work out which subject it relates to. The only issue is that not all students do the same number of subjects, but it is close enough that with a bit of manual tweaking afterwards the desired format can be achieved.

Glad it's sorted. Funnily enough since i joined here i've been known as the SIMSguy or SIMSman, but wouldn't dream of using that as a screen name until i can convince BOSSman to employ me for oodles of money

 

I thought it would go a bit funny with optional subjects, however you could make a table of formulae to go through and pull out all core subjects then the remainder would be options, but could be overkill depending on what your final purpose is with the list. For most cases, the reader can just infer what they need...

Formulae and scripts are overkill in this instance, as it is only for one person's use and they will be dressing it up and reformatting it with other things anyway. Students generally all take the same number of subjects with variation of only one, so it isn't rocket science to see which students are one column shorter than the others and then add a blank cell in column H (the location of which should remain constant, too).
