Android management

Not sure if anyone has seen this before but here is my scenario.

 

We have a couple of android devices in school that were just running Meraki to control them, pretty useless compared to the IOS settings but they were for staff really so its fine.

 

I decided to have a play with the Google device management but it wasn't much better to turned it off... but its still causing issues. I turned it off on Friday including the binding but when I wipe the device and log on again its wanting me to install the management app... and I cant as the user hasn't permission.

 

I've wiped it loads of times and even created a new user.

 

Any advise before I call up the nice people in Googleland?

Well that's 2 calls to Ireland resulting in zero help. I get the impression they aren't that bothered as we aren't paying them...tax dodgers

So I have decided to use this abomination for now, Meraki doesn't seem to play well with work profiles and I cant work out why.

 

I've setup a device but no apps are deploying.. which I think because the android for work app isn't on so I installed it but there is no 'open' to configure it when its installed.

 

Anyone else use it?

 

I'm not sure I am doing the steps in the right order.

 

Wipe device

Logon using account with a policy

Install the Google Apps Device Policy

approve device

Install the Android for work app

 

Now I am stuck, I am really surprised there isn't any further lockdowns in the settings... unless you have a v6 android device.

Sorry I'm not going to be much help, but I am interested in managing android tablets (I have Meraki MDM on 15 'Fusion 5' tablets) they have actually only been used once or twice in the 2 years we've had them - this I think is partly because they aren't iPads and partly because I don't seem to be able to 'manage' them or lock down many settings. They've really only been used as 'reward' toys with game apps.

 

Anyhow, as a little side project for my performance management, I've been told to look at utilising the tech we have sitting around in cupboards. So, I've dusted them off, spent all day yesterday looking through them and Meraki and am now ready to put them back into the cupboard...

 

They are also on Jellybean 4.1.1 and don't seem to want to update to anything newer, plus a lot of apps are saying they won't work on the tablet and it seems I can't find a way to make a 'user' or log out of the million Google services such as Google app, Gmail and Play Store it is logged into and Meraki doesn't seem interested in forcing the pathetic amount of restrictions it DOES have available...

I decided to use the Google policy for the nexus machines I have which are running 5+ and the deployment works really well, much better than Meraki but that has pathetic lockdowns too so you end up with a open tablet.

 

The little HUDL devices we have are running 4 so don't work at all with google.
