Microsoft Data Protection Manager 2010 - First Impressions

I've been itching to upgrade BackupExec 10d for a long time, but thought I would wait for DPM 2010 to be released. We use nearly all Microsoft technologies in school so it seems ideal to backup our File shares, Exchange, Sharepoint and SQL servers, hopefully even the Hyper-V stuff I've been playing with recently. DPM 2010 has now gone RTM on technet so I installed it today. First impressions are good, it looks just like backupexec maybe even a simpler interface. The first hurdle I came up against was installing the agents, so far I can't find any way to push them to servers so I had to go to the command line and run \agents\DPMAgentInstaller.exe on each server.

 

EDIT: Ok to install agents go to the DPM UI >> Management >> Install >> Install agents. I think you need to have the correct enterprise licenses as well configured.

 

The next problem is I can't actually find any instructions on using the software! Clicking help simply brings up the System Centre guide, and searching online for video tutorials results in some boring Microsoft bod talking about the general features with some very shoddy camera work :)

 

I'll update this post when I get more into the actual usage of the product but initial impressions are good so far.

Let us know how you get on as I'm very interest in moving away from BE which is so expensive compared to this product.

What’s your setup? D2D2T?

I am D2D (no tape as we bought a mega server) but we are thinking about adding tape in possibly later.

I would never pay again for the massively expensive BE lics, DPM for education is so so cheap and works very very well so far.

Trying to do backup on the cheap. Got a decent quote for this software so looking seriously at it.

Hardware Requirements "The storage pool does not support Universal Serial Bus (USB)/1394 disks."

It there any way to get around this? Is there away of archiving off to an external drive for offsite storage?

 

Does it do any de-duplication or optimisation of how it stores multiple snapshots? It it like VSS in that it only stores the differences between multiple version of the same file?

I used Firestreamer which allows you to use USB hard drives as tape drives... its not perfect but it works very well.

 

Been using it for a couple of months and it does the job, you plug in your USB, start Firestreamer then tell it how many tapes you want to hold on the external drive. The config gets saved onto the external drive so when you have finished and changed drives you just load the config in Firestreamer and lock the door in DPM.

 

I got a really good discount from them when I ordered.
