We do the same as you here. Staff have access, students do not. If staff want students to view a video in there own time the can embed it in a page on our moodle vle. We have had requests for student to be able to search YouTube in a particular lesson. In this case we ask the member of staff to give us a list of student numbers and we will allow that group access for that lesson only.

I would tend to agree with you, a reasonable request IMHO would be one that is either short term but not necessarily linked with your primary job function, of one that would be but more permanent but is related to the job you are employed to do. There are of course times when a request will be asked that might not be either of these, guess in this case its up to you to decide if to say NO and argue your case or to just get on with it.

I have to agree with hightower. On a Promethean board the problem is called "spiking" by the manufacturer. We had this happen to one of our boards last year. luckily it was still under warranty as the fix was for an engineer to come and replace the control circuit board as the firmware update didn’t work!

The problem we are having is exactly the same as the vista one in the KB article posted by Iain only on XP SP3. When installing: Windows + SP2 was setup from a CD then updated by windows update to SP3. Having trawled the net yesterday i found a couple of people having the same problem, Leicester Uni being one but no one seems to have a fix yet. I will keep you all informed if i find a solution.

I have put SP3 on this years college image, all was tested and things seem to be going well BUT, i have now found that if a user is prompted to change their password when they try to logon, windows sets that user a local profile to use! After the password has been changed a use can logon to any machine running SP3 and is given the correct profile from the server but if they logon to the same machine on which they changed their password the local profile is still used as it is not automatically deleted. Obviously this is a big problem as we have all our new students enroling over the next few days. Has anyone come across this before? is there a fix? A google search seems to suggest its an issue with SP3 can anyone confirm this? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

Hi, I had a similar problem here a few month ago, changed the motherboard, ram, psu, re-ghosted nothing worked, in the end it turned out to be the graphics card. The the card had a cooling fan but the trouble was the power wires had become dislodged stopping the fan spinning thus the card overheated.

We are looking to implenent the same here, but are limiting the number of laptops to 15 per set. We have found that number works best because when a class arrives and tries to login the demand on bandwith is huge (as we have a 20mb profile!) Another thing to remember is if your antivirus updates when the laptop is switched on again this can cause things to grind to a hault. we have recommended that teachers switch on each laptop 5 mins before the class comes in and then try to stagger the students logging on. Doing this gives us the best results.

Hi to all.

We have a similar problem here, our media machine's are on there own network so we dont get huge files flying around the main college network slowing everything down. In regard to the backup we have a buffolow terra station (NAS box) the machines were fullybacked up over the holidays when it was installed and then an incremental backup is done each time the machine is switched on. (We auto boot the machines about an hour before college starts.)

We have had a slight problem this week, it seems a student used another students account to send email messages while the original student was away from the pc talking to the teacher. In our college we have a policy of not letting students lock their computers in case they abuse this facility (leave them locked). Is there a way of letting student lock there accounts but then log them off after a period of time if they are not used? I have found some ways of doing this but i wish to: 1) Vary the log off time in labs to that in the lrc and open access areas 2) Not have a time limit on how long a teacher can lock a machine 3) Still allow staff and students to use the same manditory profile If anyone has any ideas their help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

Does that mean i cannot connect a single mac to our network? when we go for a full suite the best course of action would be to create a mac network with a server, that server is what is used to connect to our windows network?

i have used mac's before but have never tried to set them up on a windows network. The college where i work is looking to get a few in for the media/art department and would appreciate it if you could let me know the basics of what can be achieved. eg can students logon and access there user account and internet connectionfrom the mac, do i need to get any additional hardware/ software?

We use it and have done for about 6 months now. It is a good package for students to access there home drives but it will only work on xp, (still no sign of vista support!). It will only allow file access, so im afraid remote control of your server is out also.

We had this problem in the summer, as NickJones says, the problem is associated with a corruption in the folder ‘C:\Windows\system32\catroot2’. To correct this all we did was to delete this folder and allow the pc to create another one on reboot. NOTE: The folder cannot be deleted until you stop the process ‘cryptsvc’

Hi all, i was just wondering if anyone knew of a way i could set up a monitor so if a new piece of equipment was attached to our network i would get an alert of some sort.
