ie7 sucked compared to ie8. I've been beta testing it since it started and have noticed a masive improvment in performance. One thing I may note is IE7 incresed login times by at least 20 seconds which was rediculus. Installed ie8 and and those problems went away. Another thing to note about ie8. when you close the browser and look in task manager, you will notice it dosent clear out of the memory and can get rediculasly large. a quick fix in cmd can solve this and has also increased browser perfomance specially when using the tabs regsvr32 actxprxy.dll That re-registers the ActiveX Interface Marshaling Library, an obscure DLL that most people (even Microsoft experts) had never heard about. (Update: 27-Mar: Note that if you try this using Windows Vista, you must do this from an elevated Command Prompt window; type cmd in the Start menu Search box, right-click the Cmd.exe shortcut, and then choose Run As Administrator. For detailed instructions with screen shots, see this post.) After restarting her computer, she tried using IE8 again. I like the compatibility function and it also supports css 2.1 much better than previous IE thnks STED for the adm file. I never found this so I really appreciate the find. Means I can now start o think about installing IE8 across the network

Ok we are taking delivery of 10 Mac's and an xserver in the next week, Which anti virus would you recommend?
-
never used alphasmarts, from what you describe their, I would not recomend either on this occasion.

only problem with eeePC is the screen size imo... some SEN kids do have difficulty with sight, coordination etc. Not to sure it would work out succesfully.

method 1 : add a new rule for svchost.exe 1. open KIS -> setting -> anti-hacker setting. 2. under rules for applications, highlight svchost.exe, click "edit". 3. a new window pops up. you will see there is a rule, "Microsoft remote desktop TCP Activity". this rule by default is "Allow outbound(stream) TCP connection, where Remote port 3389 ". don't touch it now 4. Add new rule in that windows. a new window pops up. rule name can be any, up to you. "check" local port. then click "enter port" to enter 3389. click "inbound&outbound stream", then select "inbound stream" only. 5. this new rule should be "Allow inbound (stream) TCP connection, where local port 3389" 6. click ok all the way to save changes. note: it works for me . for some reason, i haven't tried to add local port to the existent remote desktop rule. method 2: open 3389 port. 1. kis -> setting -> anti-hacker setting. 2. select "rules for packet filtering" tab 3. click "add" to add new rules. 4. a new window pops up. enter rule name(can be any, up to you). tick "local port", then click "enter port" to enter 3389. after this, the new rule should be "allow inbound&outbound tcp connection where local port 3389". 5. click ok all the way to save changes

Na mate, download virtual pc or vmware Like I did, just setup a xp virtual enviroment and allow the kids to copy files back and forth between host and virtual machine. You will need to buy additional xp licences to do this.

Thank you for the quick responce. How do I give the wamp server a name loike 'Intranet' so when users type intranet in to IE they get pointed to the intranet that is running on the wamp server?
-
...... on the same machine? I need to move the new intranet (joomla ran) from the test server on to a machne that has plenty of file space for future expansion of our intranet.
