Migrating a 2008 server to 2012

Hi there,

 

I have an old 2008 server which is under resourced, and needs replacing.

I have a suitable, newer server which can run server 2012, however I have never migrated everything over before.

 

The current 2008 server is an FRDC running around 15 client computers for our school admin department.

Can I add the 2012 server to the domain as a DC such that it gets gpol and active director and then re-do the shares such as home folders, public areas to the new server 2012?

My aim is to decommission the 2008 server.

 

Sorry for the questions, have always started a fresh in the past.
