It's a great piece of software, but what a terrible name. The name is one of the reasons why it's not widely used in our county. We've tried using GimPhoto but the title branding is still Gimp. Pulp Fiction has much to answer for.

The correct name of the program is GNU Image Manipulation Program.

 

As to the word "gimp", as a noun it's an ornamental flat braid or round cord and as a verb it means vim or spirit. Those of use who are fans of Damon Runyon, know that he used it to mean cripple or limp. All long before Pulp Fiction.
