Windows XP Explorer changes typing?

I'm having a little problem in Explorer. My network places (on a curriculum domain machine) does not show our admin domain and can't browse to it. Fine, some do, some don't. But when I try to type in the domain to get the folder I want, Explorer just erases my typing (before I've finished) and puts My Computer again. It does not matter whether i put the name of the server or it's IP address. Sometimes it lets me type several characters, but sometimes it deletes it after the first character (\) I type.

If anyone knows why it does this or how to get round it, I'd be grateful.
