Hi all,

having a nightmare, need the students to be able to download documents, pdf, xls, ppt and other similar files from the internet, or more specifically one particular site, our moodle, but want to block downloading the rest, either from all sites.

Has anyone got any ideas?

How about just blocking them from running? We had a few kids trying to run Chrome portable, but we just used AppLocker rules in Group Policy to stop any exes running except ones in the Windows folder, Program Files folder and a folder I've set up for Programming Club - they can still download the exes, but it doesn't do them any good as they won't run.

Well since you havn't give much information really, making the following assumptions about your network config, it should just work:

1. Your moodle is hosted locally.

2. Content filtering is done on your gateway, proxy server or further downstream.

3. Your clients are configured to bypass any proxy for local addresses.

If it doesnt work with that setup, I'd assume you are accessing it using the external FQDN. I'd suggest in that case, creating a local DNS zone to override the public IPs, forwarding the names to the local IPs instead.
