Mountain Lion Server DNS issues

Currently attempting to set up profile manager and no clue what i'm doing.

Server is all setup and I can access it via IP from an IDevice but not with the hostname.

server is called server.local (it's on a seperate vlan which is the guest wireless one)

 

I've set a static DNS entry for it in Smoothwall and I can ping the server with IP and hostname.

 

Do I need DNS settings in the server setting up ?

@caffrey this may be me going down the wrong route, but is your network domain name .local if so you will have problems with apple mac computers in general - I am not a mac expert but my understanding is that MacOS uses .local to mean "the local computer". For this reason we have started using .internal or .school for domain names.

Yeah i'm not sure what I'm doing having not used macs before, I just want this mac to be a profile manager for ipads - it's on a totally seperate network to the main school one via vlan and doesn't go anywhere near AD.

OK, thanks that makes more sense to me now. I went off on a tangent!

 

You may want to post this into the Smoothwall forum in case the issue is with the DNS record you have created. Sorry I am not an expert in this, but will have a look to see if I can find answers for you.

DNS record is working as far as I can tell as it resolves with ping and traceroute from a windows machine - wondering if the mac is blocking it somehow - total noob me
