Trunks between HP Switches

Hi all

 

Just a quick query - I've trunked the ports between our main switches in the IT rooms (HP 2510's) and our current core switch (HP 2910al) but just left them as a standard trunk in the configuration and everything seems to be working fine which means I'm happy.

 

When I trunked the ports to the terminal server I used LACP and configured the server the same (seemed to be the recommended way of doing it) - should I configure the links between the switches with LACP or just leave them as a trunk? What is the benefit/downside of doing it either way?

LACP is for dynamic trunks allowing you to add or subtract links to the bundle, the other way is static which is less robust under some events. LACP may be better but not by much given the limitations of the 2510 switches, we have a couple here and they are quite limited and can't do stuff like push VLANs over trunks as far as I can tell, at least not in our setup.

I haven't tried it with a regular 2510, but I have a 2510G-24 with a 4-port LACP trunk, and I am pushing 3 tagged VLANs over it just fine. I was under the impression they used very similar firmware so I'd be surprised if the 2510 can't do it.

Could be to do with our setup, can setup a static trunk then tag that in the cli but the traffic never makes it to the link at the other end. It took some digging to find the notation for the static trunks to and the 2510 apparently only does port based vlans so not sure if this allows for trunks.

May be a little more resilient if someone trippes over a patch lead but probably not a big benefit.

If i were you i would just leave it alone if its working.

 

The HP Trunk is a proprietary protocol and only works with links between HP switches that support it, it some cases it can out perform LACP.

I will try and dig out the info i have on it, so you can see the pros and cons.
