...you can't access shares on a VM Server from the real server the VM is running on

 

(Asks me for password -accepts neither the admin user one (Pretty certain I used same admin password on server and vm server) or even the standard teacher one.

 

Of course, all my real clients (XP and Win7) are fine - just me on the server as I'm trying to do some end of year tidying!

I wonder if the physical host has virtual NICs created on it for talking to locally hosted VMs. The subnet that these NICs are addressed with probably aren't routable and thus can't get to the domain for authentication. Give a look inside the VM and disable any NICs that aren't connected to the physical network. This might have something to do with your authentication problem.
