[sims] Trying Creating a report with all of a pupil's grades grouped together

I need some help with creating reports in SIMS. I don't know haw to get a report with several grades per pupil grouped togetrher.

 

I want to define a report that groups pupil's results all together that has a pupil's grades grouped together, like this:

 

Jane Green

Reading 1b

Writing 1a

Speaking 2b

Listening 1a

Number 1c

etc

 

and also a report thnat does this:

 

Reading Writing Speaking Listening Number......

Jane Green 1b 1a 2b 1a 1c

Helen Jones 1a 2c 1a etc

John Smith 1a 1a etc

Jane Smith 2a 3a

 

At the moment all I can get is a list:

 

Student Subject Grade

Jane Green Reading 1c

Jane Green Writing 1c

Jane Green Speaking 1c

Jane Green Listening 1c

Jane Green Number 1c

Jane Green SSM 1c

Jane Green etc 1c

Jane Green etc 1c

Jane Green etc 1c

Jane Green etc 1c

Helen Jones Reading 1a

Helen Jones etc

Helen Jones etc

Helen Jones etc

Helen Jones etc

I have SIM.net set up with marksheets, each markeheet is a classlist with 1 grade per pupil, eg:

 

Class 1

Student Reading

Jane Green 1b

Helen Jones 1c

John Smith 2c

Jane Smith 1a

 

These are repeated for each class. Then there are other subjects:

 

Class 1

Student Number

Jane Green 1c

Helen Jones 1a

John Smith 1a

Jane Smith 2a

 

So there are about 10 per class and about 20 lasses, so 200 altogether.

I haven't been doing this long, so I may be telling you a long winded way of doing it - but I would create a new template, include all the aspects that hold the grades across the top, and be done.

 

If I wanted it in Excel, I'd export it out and change the XML sheet to XLSX.

 

If you are wanting to print it to paper, I think I'd go with an individual report that calls out for each aspect.

Basically, your options are:

 

Individual Report (Focus > Assessment > Individual Report) - This is a very easily customisable report; you simply create a template in word and drop your aspects where you want them in the same way you would a mail merge. The problem is, it'll only work on a per student basis, so at best you'd have a page per student.

 

Report (Reports > Design Report) - This will give you a list of all the info you want and can be exported to Excel where (depending on your Excel skills!) you can format it however you want - this sounds like the method you're using at the moment. You can also get this to export to RTF which also has some good formatting options, although it will be tricky to get a decently formatted list this way; the SIMS report engine isn't fantastic at assessment based reports (IMO)

 

Template & Marksheet (Focus > Assessment > Template) - In my opinion, this is your best option. You can create a template which is simply a list of aspects linked to result sets - these vbecome your columns on the marksheet. The marksheet can be based on any kind of group in SIMS i.e. classes, reg groups, ethnicity groups etc. and students are listed with a row each. Be careful with this though as if a value is edited, it will overwrite the value stored in the database (you can easily make columns read only though, there's a check box for this)

What @tombry said for summary of data. Or Individual report for output per student as @LosOjos, the other option is, based on the output you're getting i think a pivot table would remove the duplicate names and summarise the data. Not sure, would have to try it though.
