ihaveaproblem Posted May 12, 2012 Posted May 12, 2012 Hi, Looking at getting a fiber switch for a SAN. It only needs 6 ports on the switch. It's a HP SAN and HP servers connecting to it. I've looked at the HP SAN switches on the HP website, however they seem to be very expensive. ( £2000 - £3000 ) Anyone have recommendations on what’s good/bad? What you use
glennda Posted May 12, 2012 Posted May 12, 2012 I used the HP 8/20Q fiber channel switch it just kind of works!
ihaveaproblem Posted May 12, 2012 Author Posted May 12, 2012 I used the HP 8/20Q fiber channel switch it just kind of works! Hmm but they are so expensive ! http://h71016.www7.hp.com/ctoBases.asp?oi=E9CED&BEID=19701&SBLID=&ProductLineId=450&FamilyId=2738&LowBaseId=23878&LowPrice=%2477%2E00&familyviewgroup=3333&viewtype=Matrix $4000... are all san switches so pricey? Or are we just paying for the name with 'HP'
glennda Posted May 12, 2012 Posted May 12, 2012 £1400 - AQ233A HP SWORKS 8/20Q FC SWITCH Although it has more ports it only is licensed for 8 and you would need to buy an additional license to use the rest of the ports. its quick but Fiber Channel is expensive What San are you going for?
ihaveaproblem Posted May 12, 2012 Author Posted May 12, 2012 That price is better. Only need 8 ports so wont require an additional license. It's a HP San that we have already. Not sure of the model without looking though. will get @Millgate to give me a good price ! ( I hope ) 1
glennda Posted May 12, 2012 Posted May 12, 2012 yeah I think Luke may have quoted me one a while back when i had to make some money to make disappear but i never bought it (i got two servers instead!). Only downside to that switch is it has a single PSU. 1
alttab Posted May 13, 2012 Posted May 13, 2012 Hmm but they are so expensive ! HP's Small & Medium Business Online Store $4000... are all san switches so pricey? Or are we just paying for the name with 'HP' pricey relative to what ? your not paying for a name at those prices, that's pretty standard for those number of available ports. Obviously a reseller might be able to quote you cheaper than advertised price. i've purchased 24 port 4/2/1 switches in the past (8 active) for between 2k-2.5k and i've thought them to be very reasonably priced, given it's fibre channel. It is what it is. If your shaping yourself up to go the fibre channel fabric route your looking to pay more than you would FC DAS or iSCSI.

( I hope ) If you expand thought the additional license can be added later on, was about an extra grand though! HP FC Cards tend to come with 1 GBic (or 2 if they are dual port) so you will need to buy gbics for the FC switch only.
