[sims] Upgrade Sims 2 Spring 2012

Hi,

I have been asked to upgrade to Sims Spring 2012 using solus 3?

 

When looking at the available installs I can see the following? What is the install process.

 

Does one supersede the other?

 

Sims Database Spring 2012 (3.61.798)

Sims Database Spring 2012 (3.61.804)

Sims Spring 2012 (7.144.30)

Sims Database Spring 2012 Update (3.61.806)

Sims Spring 2012 Upgdate (7.144.36)

We ran the SIMS Spring 2012 Update (7.144.36) which installs everything it needs. It will install the initial spring release and then the spring update afterwards.

SOLUS3 is alot more modular. So you see all the individual components rather then just one large upgrade. In this case you have:

 

Three Database upgrade components:

Sims Database Spring 2012 (3.61.798)

Sims Database Spring 2012 (3.61.804)

Sims Database Spring 2012 Update (3.61.806)

 

Then two application components:

Sims Spring 2012 (7.144.30)

Sims Spring 2012 Upgdate (7.144.36)

 

If you apply Sims Spring 2012 Update (7.144.36), the main package, when you go to deploy it, it will tell you that it needs to deploy all the sub-components - basically the other parts. I've asked for them to change it so you have a clearer view - so releases, databases, patches and pre-req (sql compact, etc) are in separate tabs. So in the releases, all you see is the actual releases that you need to worry about.

At least with the new version you will only see 4 months worth of updates!

 

This is from the release note of the new version:

The From date in the Release date filter on the Manage updates page will now default to four months before the current date. This reduces the number of visible updates on the Manage updates page making finding recent updates easier.

Better, yes. Perfect, far from it. The next version is going to download any packages that needs to be downloaded, so that' ll cover the issue I had where I hadn't notice the start date on the filter and wondered why I couldn't deploy anything because it was had components older then 4 months

Now if we can get down to just the planned 3 Upgrades per year (i.e. no re-releases!) then 4 months will be fine - it should just be one set of main releases showing!

Or is that too much to hope for?

My next problem is telling staff that they cannot use Sims for a few hours and hopefully solus 3 will update workstations with no problems.. (Not holding my breadth)!!

 

Do other managers have to do the same!! Or do they rollout overnight?? and does it work??

If you haven't already done it, roll out .118 first, they at least get to skip the 2 min wait. Out-of-hours the way to go, just the staff laptops that cause the problems.

I do my best to find a 'release breaker' when I go down to UAT!

I reckon I have done a couple of times! My best was when the new NT4-type Timetable Reporting (in SIMS) functionality could not cope with the complexity of my timetable, at Year Group Level. So they had to pull that bit of the functionality. It took nearly a year (and my subsequent datasets!) before they finally got working Year Timetables in SIMS!

The problem is, the system is that vast, you just can't (as a user) test everything! The initial Spring release had the bug that I (and at least two other schools) spotted after release, and caused them to pull that version! I had not noticed it at UAT!

If you haven't already done it, roll out .118 first, they at least get to skip the 2 min wait. Out-of-hours the way to go, just the staff laptops that cause the problems.

 

Ok I figured out what .118 is DUH!!!

 

Will roll that out tomorrow.

 

Then Run Sims Spring over the weekend..

 

Then on Tue as PC are switched on.. They should auto upgrade...

.118 - the latest version of SOLUS3

 

Should do. If the user launches SIMS whilst it's still upgrading, which is likely, you may, ok, you WILL need to reboot - basically it won't update some of the files that were in use until the machine reboots

I did say to Capita they should rename\delete pulsar.exe so people can't load SIMS whilst it's upgrading - or rather try to load it! Ideally put a dummy file in that tells you to put the kettle on

I have pushed the Solus 118 out. But obv because some of the computers arnt on they haven't updated...

 

Will these AUTO update when switched on??
