If the aim is to charge devices overnight, then the idea might be to have something that can charge 6 devices at a time. A bunch of six-way mains adaptors connected to some kind of switchable adaptor controlled by an Ardunio or a Raspberry Pi should do it - just have it turn one bank on for a couple of hours, then the next and so on.

If you're planning on using it in a classroom, bear in mind it seems to need a 38A power supply.

 

I believe that you're confusing Amps here. For example, ff you look at a typical laptop power supply, you will see a label showing two sets of figures, in and out, the one I'm using now shows:

 

Input - 100/240V at 1.5A

Output - 19V at 3.42A

 

It is the input Ampage figure that is relevant to the mains power supply. Typically a standard wall outlet is rated to supply 13A, so, I should safely be able to run 8 of such power supplies for a single socket (8 x 1.5 = 12 amps). Note, this is for a laptop which is capable of drawing enough power, not only to run and charge itself, but also to run several USB ports at the same time. You should check the figures on the power adapters you wish to use.

 

EDIT: Just found these figures for the genuine Apple iPad charger:

 

Input 100-240V 0.45A 50-60Hz

Output: 5.1V 2.3A

 

So, 28 of these could be run from a single 13A socket (28 x .45 = 12.6 Amps)....

Good point - you're right, that's 38A at 5V, not 240V. I imagine it'll need something a bit fancier than your average wall-wart style transformer, though.

Did anyone find a solution that's actually available in in the UK, and doesn't cost £1000+ to do something that can be done for £20 worth of mains extensions?

I saw this the other day Griffin Technology 10-Bay MultiDock for iPad/iPhone/iPod ( GA23149 ) they do 10/20/30 bay options. Dont know if these are more reasonable.

I am not sure when it will be released in the UK, but Kanex have a 4 port USB charger for iPad's called Sydnee which provides 2.1 amps per port.

 

The price on their website (£129) is the RRP and inclusive of VAT, so in practice it will be a lot lower.
