Capturing and Deploying XP with MDT or WDS

Hi guys!

I have tried and tried to follow all sorts of guides to deploy and capture XP with WDS or MDT and I haven't got it working?!

 

I have the following hardware for my server:

 

Chassi: NZXT Classic Series H2 - miditower - ATX

Motherboard: GIGABYTE GA-990FXA-UD3 (rev. 1.0) - moderkort - ATX - Socket AM3+ - AMD 990FX (GA-990FXA-UD3)

Procesor: AMD Black Edition AMD Phenom II X6 1090T / 3.2 GHz processor

Memory: 2x CORSAIR Vengeance Dual C DDR3 8GB Kit, 1600MHz (CML8GX3M2A1600C9B)

Hard Drives: 1x KINGSTON HYPERX 120GB SSD SATA/600 MLC KIT (for OS)

Hard Drives: 2x WESTERN DIGITAL CAVIAR BLACK 1TB 7200RPM SATA/600 64MB (for fast storage)

Hard Drives: 2x WESTERN DIGITAL CAVIAR GREEN 2TB SATA/300 64MB (for main storage customer images etc)

PSU: CORSAIR HX 750W ATX12V 2.2 / EPS12V

Graphics Card: ASUS RADEON HD5670 1GB GDDR5 PCI-E VGA/DVI/HDMI

Heatsink: NOCTUA NH-D14 S-1155/1156/1366/AM3

 

I have installed Windows Server 2008r2 and added the following roles dns, dhcp, ad, wds, ...installed waik and MDT....

 

I have VMware workstation 8 installed and can deploy and capture Windows 7 OK but not XP. I know there are problems importing xp to MDT and have adjusted to suit...I create my task sequence and try to capture...xp isn't showing in my task sequence list on vm?

 

I can give more info as needed.....

 

Can anyone give me a complete account of how to capture and deploy xp with MDT 2010? I haven't tried MDT 2012 yet and don't know if that would be bettler suited to my task.....

 

I need Windows Server 2008r2 and that is why everything has gone to a Windows solution, but I have nearly given up on Windows and will go to FOG if I can't get this working....

I can confirm that it definitely work with XP and works very well - we use it all the time. Are you trying to capture a pre-built XP machine or are you building and capturing in the same task sequence?

I am creating separate task sequences....

 

OK! Here is the situation I have a Windows XP Home Edition sp1 and I have installed that in VMware Workstation 8 and updtated with all updates and service packs.....

 

I created the taks sequences for capture and deployment....

 

I created a Sysprep directory on the vm C:\Sysprep and added the files from the latest sp3 cab and ran sysprep using the original unattend which I copied to Sysprep...... I run the "reseal" option (taking a snapshot) of the vm before running sysprep.....

 

I have recreated my boot images completely and then run the sysprep sequence in the vm instead of capture sequence from MDT...

But my task sequence isn't being listed....

 

Where do we start?

Hi again!

OK! Should have said...I have added a LAN Driver for my networkcard on the Server in the "out of box" drivers and now I am getting.... a connection to the deployment error...bla, bla....

PCI\VEN_1022&DEV_2000&SUBYS_20001022&REV_10

 

OK! this is crazy...I removed that driver and updated boot images...but am still getting the above error?

Ah!

 

Can anyone confirm that Home edition can be used with MDT? A lot of network stuff is not supported in Home as far as I know.

 

Update: Yeah a bit of searching shows that XP Home is not allowed - apparently you can trick it by renaming some files, but really Pro is the way to go if you can.

Aren't there any drivers that can be added to make this work?

I need a deployment solution that covers all Windows ....have a lot of customers that still have Windows XP Home Edition..

I would be willing to bet WDS is ignoring it since it's Home edition. You will be able to make this work though if you're willing to let WDS go. Just role up a BartPE or WinPE image and use Ghost32 for capture and deployment.

The whole point of this exercise was to be able to utilise one solution for everything...

But I do appreciate your input.
